VML was submitted as a proposed standard to the W3C 
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W3C> in 1998 by Microsoft 
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft>, Macromedia 
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macromedia>, and others
....

As a result of these submissions, a new W3C working group was created, 
which produced SVG <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scalable_Vector_Graphics>.

Even though largely ignored by developers, Microsoft still implem.....
