La verzione oficiale e' questa:

Sarge/Testing is composed of packages from Sid/Unstable that are stable
enough to be "tested" for superb stability an later on, moved to
Woody/Stable as a non-crashing, supersecure distro. The problem with
this, is that by that time, the packages are too old for some of us.
Many people love this, they love never to have to worry about anything.
You can use kernel 2.2.x or 2.4.x Sarge is the best of both worlds, very
stable and with a fairly modern packages for the desktop.

Check the different packages in the 3 versions:
http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages

Unstable/Sid is the favorite of most young geeks, it has the latest
packages. So When you download the latest version of RH or Slack, you
are downloading the equivalent (in the Debian world) of Sid. It's a
matter of taste, you report the bugs, they fix them you download again,
or get a new version in a couple of months. In sid, you install and
update and upgrade don't have to reinstall you continue with the same
one. Hardware is not that important unless you are scientist but the
BROADBAND. In both versions you have to update and download at your
convenience (i do it every morning because it takes me 5 minutes) my
cousin does it once a week takes him 30 minutes, we both use ADSL (256).

And then you got another source more avant-garde than Sid, the "extra
official repositories" in apt-get.org, done by geeks who provide
sources.list lines that you add to your /etc/apt/sources.list, update
and install using apt-get. Also they got "backports" for Woody and
Sarge. For example: Woody and Sarge come with Moz 1.0 but you want the
latest, you look in www.apt-get.org for a backport for Woody, add the
lines to the sources list, update, and install y presto!, you got Woody
with the latest Mozilla, etc, etc, with the rest...

I gotta go, the wife wants me to take her grocery shopping. :)

Later,
